Day 2 · Week 1 — Learn to hear yourself
Filler Forensics
The nuance
Kill the crutch, keep the beat
Fillers are not a moral failing. They exist because your mouth is waiting for your brain, and silence feels like the recording has died.
The fix is not to eliminate the pause — it is to move the signal from your mouth into the air. “Um” says I am stalling. A held 1.5-second silence says I am choosing my next word. Same information, radically different authority.
The mechanic
- 1Transcribe yesterday's recording and highlight every um, uh, like, so, kind of, literally, basically, you know.
- 2Count them. Write the honest number down — a baseline you will beat on Day 7.
- 3Rank your top three by frequency and attack only those three.
- 4Every time you feel one coming, close your mouth and inhale through the nose instead.
The drill clock — live timers

- What is a small thing that instantly ruins your mood?
- Explain why your way of doing an ordinary chore is objectively correct.
- Describe a trend you watched arrive and would like to see leave.
- Tell the story of a purchase you regret, in detail.
The trap
Replacing um with right? or yeah or a nervous laugh. You have rebranded the crutch, not removed it.
